The word tecuani comes from Náhuatl and refers to a fierce or devouring animal — during the traditional Pelea de Tigres, children and adults wear the heavy leather masks as both transformation and protection. In contemporary design, these masks became widely recognized through the work of Carla Fernández, one of Mexico's most influential fashion designers.
