“Oax-i-fornia” Blending Tradition and Innovation in the Heart of Oaxaca

Raúl Cabra, the visionary designer behind La Embajada and the co-founder of Oaxifornia, invites you on a journey into a unique creative experiment. Oaxifornia isn't just a project; it's a philosophy – a space where tradition and innovation collide, sparking a vibrant exchange of ideas and techniques.
Born from a seemingly ordinary summer adventure in Oaxaca, Oaxifornia has blossomed into a powerful force for cultural interaction and design education. But how did it all begin?
A Seed of Change

Nineteen years ago, Raúl, along with his partner Michael Sledge, embarked on a three-month stay in Oaxaca. This wasn't a typical tourist trip. Raúl, a seasoned design professor, envisioned a summer class – a platform for artists, designers, and artisans to share knowledge and collaborate in this beautiful setting. This simple proposition, christened "Oax-i-fornia," would become the catalyst for a remarkable transformation.

Tradition: A Living Legacy

Oaxifornia operates on the principle that traditional forms of making are not static. They are, in fact, dynamic entities that evolve alongside new contexts. Artisanal practices adapt and integrate new materials and techniques, ensuring their survival for future generations.

However, tradition can also stagnate. This is where Oaxifornia introduces the concept of "generative intersections." Imagine a historical crossroads where tradition encounters new influences, like the arrival of the Spanish in Tenochtitlán. This collision forced adaptations, giving rise to hybrid objects that embodied a new era.

A Space for Shared Creation

Oaxifornia fosters a similar kind of generative intersection. It brings together makers from diverse backgrounds to explore and experiment. This collaborative environment allows tradition to evolve in a respectful and meaningful way. Artisans and designers engage in a dialogue without the power imbalances of a typical designer-producer relationship.

The project prioritizes a truly egalitarian experience. Artisans are not passive recipients; they are active participants who contribute their expertise and share in the benefits of collaboration. The final object becomes a symbol of the shared experience, not the sole objective.

 Beyond the Project

Oaxifornia isn't just about creating objects. It's about fostering understanding and connection. Through the creative process, participants gain a deeper appreciation for different cultures and perspectives. Students discover new ways of seeing the world, while artisans gain access to fresh ideas and potential new markets.

A Legacy of Innovation

Oaxifornia stands as a testament to the power of collaboration. By nurturing a space for shared creation, it breathes new life into tradition while fostering cultural bridges. As Raúl himself says, "Oaxifornia, in some small way, may create a measurable, tangible, and positive impact on the world."
