La Fuente de las Tarascas
This fountain is speculated to be of 3 Purépecha Princesses. These princess are holding a large, woven basket filled with local fruits. The 3 princesses are:
Atzimba, a tragic love story of a princess who fell in love with a conquistador, which was forbidden at the time, and both were exiled from their respective communities, ultimately becoming a symbol of love vs. loyalty.
Eréndira, a legendary warrior who resisted the Spanish invasion. She came to represent bravery, independence, and leadership while being the living personification of Indigenous resistance.
Tzetzangari,
said to have been an exceptional beauty who was a virgin priestess. She secretly fell in love with one of the king's servants which aroused jealousy in the court. The king had arranged the death of anyone who he saw as a rival, including the man Tzetzangari was in love with. Once she found out about his death, she cried so much that her tears flooded a valley and created Lake Zirahuén (Mirror of the Gods). She is seen as the embodiment of sorrow, grief, and the creation of natural beauty through grief - deeply poetic.
