Painted Janitzio Tray. C. 1940's
Expertly hand-painted, this charming tray showcases the beauty of Lake Pátzcuaro and its famous Janitzio Island. Located in Michoacán, Lake Pátzcuaro's largest island is home to the picturesque town of Janitzio, known for its skilled butterfly fishermen who use butterfly-shaped nets to catch "pescado blanco," a unique species of freshwater silverside. The town, whose name means "Maize Flower" in Purepecha, can only be reached by boat and is perched atop a hill. This iconic town and its fishermen were once featured on the 50 peso banknote, a highly sought-after collectible item.
