Popocatépl and Ixtaccíhuatl
The love story of Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl begins with the beautiful princess Iztaccíhuatl, who was deeply in love with Popocatépetl, a renowned warrior. Their happiness was immense until Popocatépetl was called to war. Before leaving, he asked Iztaccíhuatl's father for her hand in marriage and her father agreed, with the condition that he win the war and return safely.
After Popocatépetl's victory, a jealous rival falsely reported his death to Iztaccíhuatl. Grief stricken by the news, Iztaccíhuatl died from a broken heart. When Popocatépetl returned and discovered her fate, he carried her to a mountain, lit a torch, and vowed to keep it burning in her honor. He kneeled beside her, and over time, snow covered their bodies, turning them into the giant volcanoes that will stand together for the rest of time.
