The Resplendent Quetzal was a key symbol for the ancient Maya and Aztec peoples of Central America. Its name means "sacred" or "precious" in Mesoamerican languages, and the bird was revered as divine. It was linked to the feathered serpent god Quetzalcoatl, with quetzal feathers adorning the serpent's head.
