Tehuana Women & the Resplandor
Tehuana women’s formal outfits are intricate and require multiple people to complete. Muxes (a third gender in Zapotec culture) design the flowers to be hand embroidered, while planchadoras starch the lace frills on the skirts. A key feature is the resplandor, a distinctive headdress from the Tehuantepec Isthmus, popular since the '30s. Made of starched white lace, it can be worn two ways: prominently on top of the head for festivals and the Guelaguetza, or framing the face for religious or more conservative events.
