Ixtaltepec Fire Vessel

Made in Ixtaltepec, Oaxaca, in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, this monumental clay fire vessel takes a traditional earthen form and pushes it to an almost architectural scale. Hand formed in local clay, its broad, low profile and irregular surface retain the directness of the region's utilitarian pottery while giving the piece an extraordinary sculptural presence.

Built for outdoor use, the vessel must be raised from the ground on a metal stand, stone supports, or a simple stack of bricks. Air must circulate freely beneath the base while in use. This is essential, as heat trapped underneath can cause the clay to crack.

For outdoor use only. Always install with adequate airflow beneath the vessel. Do not place directly on the ground or on, above, or near flammable surfaces or materials.
