Emerald Optical Glass Bowl

A substantial bowl of deep emerald pressed glass, poured into a mold and formed with unusually thick walls. The weight is extraordinary; so is the way it holds light.

In the sun, the glass bends and fractures the color around it, behaving almost like a prism and casting green reflections across the table. It can hold fruit, flowers, or small objects, but is perhaps most beautiful left empty, part vessel, part optical object.

Made in Hidalgo by a family-operated glassworks. Subtle variations and traces of the molding process are part of each piece.

About Glass from Hidalgo
Hidalgo has a long, largely uncelebrated history of small-scale glassmaking. Family-operated factories continue to work with recycled glass, melting discarded bottles and fragments and returning them to use as blown and pressed vessels of remarkable weight, color, and clarity.

Glassmaking has traditionally been a male trade in Mexico, but some of the factories that remain in Hidalgo are now sustained largely by women. As men left the furnaces for the dangerous economy surrounding huachicol, the illicit fuel trade that has profoundly affected the region, women learned the work and became essential to keeping the factories alive.

The glass reflects that persistence. Dense, luminous, and often imperfect, it is shaped by an industry adapting to the realities around it while preserving the knowledge of heat, timing, and practiced hands.
