Tama Utility Bowl Set

Sale price$185.00

The Tama Utility Bowls are made from barro fuerte, a traditional clay body with a higher sand content that makes it more durable and resistant than many of the finer clays used throughout Mexico. Practical by nature, these are everyday vessels designed to be used, stacked, washed, and returned to the table again and again.

Each bowl is hand-formed and fired outdoors in wood-fueled open-air kilns. During the firing process, flames, ash, and burning wood come into direct contact with the clay, leaving behind distinctive black markings that make every piece unique. These natural fire marks are not decoration but a visible record of the firing itself.

Ideal for serving salads, fruit, vegetables, snacks, and shared dishes, the collection balances a deeply rooted ceramic tradition with a remarkably modern sensibility. Their durability has also made them favorites as elevated food and water bowls for dogs.

Sold as a nesting set of three sizes.

About Barro Fuerte
Barro fuerte — literally "strong clay" — is a traditional ceramic body used across Oaxaca, distinguished by its higher sand content and coarser texture. Unlike the refined clays used for decorative wares, barro fuerte was developed for durability: it withstands daily use, resists chipping, and holds up to repeated washing. Pieces are hand-formed and fired in open-air wood kilns, where direct contact with flame and ash leaves behind the natural black markings that give each piece its character. It is a working clay with a long history — honest, resilient, and deeply rooted in the everyday life of Oaxacan communities.

Care
Hand wash with mild soap. Not dishwasher safe. Stovetop, oven, and wood-fire safe.

About Handmade Pieces
Crafted by hand using techniques passed down through generations of master artisans. Variations in color, texture, and finish are inherent to the process — each piece is, by nature, one of a kind.
