Tonalá Ceramic
Tonalá, Mexico, has been renowned for its clay since the pre-Hispanic era. Its reputation was boosted in the early 16th century when Europeans became fascinated with the quality of the region’s clay. The vibrant colors used for burnishing ceramics came from powdered, colorful clay found in Mexican soil. In the 17th century, Augustinian missionaries introduced lacquer techniques that complemented the traditional burnishing methods. Tonalá ceramics became prized luxury items in Spain, valued for their color and design.
