Zitlala Leather Tecuani Mask

Hand-cut and stitched from leather, this mask represents the tecuani — the powerful feline figure known in Guerrero as the tigre, though its form derives from the jaguar native to the Americas. Mirror eyes, leather teeth, a projecting tongue, raised ears, and natural bristles give each mask its fierce, unmistakable expression. Made in Zitlala, Guerrero by a family of master artisans who have carried this tradition across generations. Available in child and adult sizes; each mask is sold individually.

About the Tecuani Masks of Zitlala
Leather tecuani masks are associated with the Nahua communities of central Guerrero, particularly Zitlala, where they are worn in ceremonies connected to rain, agriculture, and community life. The word tecuani comes from Náhuatl and refers to a fierce or devouring animal — during the traditional Pelea de Tigres, children and adults wear the heavy leather masks as both transformation and protection. In contemporary design, these masks became widely recognized through the work of Carla Fernández, one of Mexico's most influential fashion designers. Their origin, however, belongs to Guerrero's popular culture and to generations of makers and ceremonial participants who continue the tradition.
