Benito Juarez
Benito Juárez (1806–1872) was one of Mexico’s most important political leaders and a symbol of liberal reform and resistance to foreign domination.
He was born in the state of Oaxaca to an indigenous Zapotec family and grew up speaking Zapotec before learning Spanish. Despite humble beginnings, he studied law and became involved in politics, aligning with liberal ideals that promoted democracy, secular government, and equality under the law.
Juárez served as president until his death in 1872. He is remembered for defending Mexico’s sovereignty, promoting the rule of law, and advancing liberal reforms. His famous principle—“Respect for the rights of others is peace”—remains a cornerstone of Mexican political philosophy.
