Huancito Clay Large Pitcher with Floral and Hummingbird Motif

Sale price$595.00

The statement piece of our Huáncito collection. Handmade in Michoacán’s Purépecha highlands, this large-scale vessel carries the quiet authority of Huáncito’s ceramic tradition — a place long known for sculptural clay forms and vessels historically tied to water. The dark clay body and finely worked surface give the piece both presence and restraint, grounding the collection with a singular sense of scale.

Craft:
Each piece in this collection was selected through a juried competition at the Domingo de Ramos tianguis in Uruapan, Michoacán — one of Mexico's most celebrated popular art markets. These are works by master artisans of the region, made by hand using traditional techniques passed down through generations. Minor variations in color, texture, and finish are inherent to the handmade process and are part of what makes each piece singular.

Made in Michoacán:
Made in Huáncito, Michoacán — a Purépecha town within La Cañada de los Once Pueblos long known for its ceramic tradition.

For generations, Huáncito has been associated with clay vessels tied to the storage and transport of water — particularly cántaros and ornamental vessel forms that emerged from everyday life in the region. Following the arrival of Bishop Vasco de Quiroga in the 16th century, many towns in Michoacán deepened craft specializations, and Huáncito became especially known for its ceramics.

Often burnished rather than glazed, Huáncito pottery is polished by hand to achieve its soft satin surface. Sculptural animals, floral motifs, and decorative vessels continue to emerge from family workshops where techniques are passed from generation to generation.

At once humble and refined, Huáncito ceramics carry the quiet beauty of objects shaped by utility, place, and living tradition.
